Riding over from Belgium especially, we're so pleased Trui Hanoulle has confirmed she is coming back to The Overland Event for 2025.
She first wrote for Overland Magazine nearly a decade ago after riding an electric Zero DS across Europe to Istanbul. You might remember her stunning photography in issues 13 and 14. We like to think of her as being the cultural avante garde of motorcycle travel but who exactly is she, you might ask?
Well, after having conquered Europe by hitchhiking on trucks, Trui switched to motorcycles for her travels and has never looked back. Over the last 25 years, she has overlanded from Belgium to the Himalayas, to Central Asia, to Oman and Yemen, and criss-crossed her favourite Iran seven times.
Her travels in the 90s led to her featuring in early editions of Chris Scott’s Adventure Motorcycle Handbook, and in 2008 she published the book ‘Girls, Muslims & Motorcycles’, together with writer and then-lover Gaea Schoeters. In text and photos, it tells of numerous encounters and adventures during their journey through nine Muslim countries in Eurasia.
Forever travelling with a purpose, more recently Trui created the ambitious global project ‘Trailblazers’, tracking down, speaking to, and photographing wayward women who use their vehicles as a means of emancipation.
For Overland, like a minstrel on an iron horse, she will bring to life cherry-picked stories from England, Tanzania, Germany, Japan, Italy, Iran, and India. Bikers mainly, plus a few odd ones out, but there are lots of stories to tell so check the scheduling over the weekend to see where, when and what she might be speaking about!
Currently in India working on her 'Move She Does' project, it’s important to note that seducing Trui into nearly every endeavour involves a good coffee.
